Screening: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (26th September 5pm)

There’s been a last minute change of plans regarding the opening film for the new CineClub programme and we are dropping Cowboys and Aliens in favour of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the institution that is James Bond. We will be screening the 6th Bond film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969, UK, d., Peter Hunt), adapted from Ian Fleming’s 1963 novel of the same name.

This is the Bond film that sits somewhat uneasily, between Sean Connery’s supposed final film (You Only Live Twice) and his temporary return (Diamonds Are Forever), and it stars George Lazenby as 007 – a role he played once only.  This is one of the lesser seen Bond films mainly because it lacks the Sean Connery/Roger Moore cache but it’s well worth seeing. Bond even gets married! If you’ve never seen this Bond film (and even if you have) you should come along to the opening event and get a feel for CineClub.

Our resident James Bond expert, John-Paul Green, will introduce this film and explain why it deserves our attention, other than the fact that its theme tune is one of the greatest Bond  songs (check out the awesome remix by the Propellerheads). No doubt, he will regale us with plethora of little know facts and items of trivia that a very select few can lay claim to know.

You should be able to find a taster of the film below:

As ever, screenings are FREE and everyone is welcome

Stop the press! Ch-ch-ch-changes abound…

For a number of reasons (mainly involving calendar clashes) there’s been some last minute changes to the CineClub schedule. Next week’s film will not be Cowboys and Aliens after all (a collective sigh of relief all round then – Ed.), and has been shelved in favour of a Bond classic, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969, UK, Peter Hunt). We’ve also listened to some suggestions from the students and completed the full programme of events, which are listed below and found in the Current Schedule tab on the homepage. Check out what we have in store this season:

  • 26th September: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (Peter R Hunt, 1969)
  • 3rd October: Los Cronocrímenes/ Timecrimes (Nacho Vigalondo, 2007)
  • 10th October: Land and Freedom (Ken Loach, 1995)
  • 17th October: Almost Famous (Cameron Crowe, 2000)
  • 24th October: Boogie Nights (Paul Thomas Anderson, 1997)
  • 31st October: Halloween III: Season of the Witch (Tommy Lee Wallace, 1982)
  • 7th November: Inglorious Basterds (Quentin Tarantino, 2009)
  • 14th November: Oldboy (Park Chan-Wook, 2003)
  • 21st November: The Swimmer (Frank Perry, 1968)
  • 28th November: Twelve Monkeys (Terry Gillian, 1995)
  • 5th December: V For Vendetta (James McTeague, 2005)
  • 12th December: Special Christmas Event – to be announced…

Screening: Cowboys and Aliens (26th September 5pm)

CineClub is gathering comparisons to buses today – you wait all summer for a post and then two come at once! Yes, I’m here to let you know that we are kicking off the current season of films with Cowboys and Aliens (2011, UK, John Favreau) also known and Indiana Jones and James Bond versus CGI. This is from the director who brought you Elf, Iron Man and Iron Man 2.

This film has been selected by our very own Professor John Storey who never seems shy of courting cinematic controversy with his selections. Expect lively and spirited, ahem, debate and discussion after this one. It’s also a film that has its origins in a 2006 comic book of the same name.

IF YOU LOVE FILM, DON’T GO TO LOVEFILM – COME TO CINECLUB.

Cineclub returns and look what we’ve done…

Welcome back to CineClub. Didn’t the summer just fly by? I trust many of you saw some brilliant films? Well, it’s time to see what gems we have in store for the period between now and Christmas. And I need to inform you that we only have a half a season scheduled thus far.

“What?!? But films start back up on Wednesday” I hear you cry. We’ve decided to let the returning cinéastes and the new students take the time to nominate some films that they’d like to see running at CineClub. We do have a backup plan if we fail to get enough suggestions, so rest assured that films will roll.  You can send us your suggestions in many ways: either leave a comment on this site, email us, Facebook us or Tweet us (details here). You can even tell us to our faces – imagine that!

All that we ask in return for a nomination is that you do a brief introduction to the film, and guide the discussion afterwards. Also, if you’d like to write for CineClub and offer your thoughts on what you’ve seen or witnessed then drop me (Rob) an email and I’d be happy to publish your work.

Anyway, enough of the background, this is what is currently planned:

  • 26th September:  Cowboys and Aliens (Jon Favreau, 2011)
  • 3rd October: Los Cronocrímenes/ Timecrimes (Nacho Vigalondo, 2007)
  • 10th October: Land and Freedom (Ken Loach, 1995)
  • 17th October: Almost Famous (Cameron Crowe, 2000)
  • 24th October: Entre Les Murs/ The Class (Laurent Cantet, 2008)
  • 31st October: Halloween III: Season of the Witch (Tommy Lee Wallace, 1982)

As ever, screenings take place in the Cinema (MC207) at 5pm on Wednesdays. Free of charge
