Screening: Chasing Amy (2nd October, 5pm)

Chasing_Amy_film

Following the success of indie breakthrough, Clerks, and Mallrats, Kevin Smith’s Chasing Amy is a romantic comedy with a difference.

Ben Affleck plays Holden McNeil, a comic book artist, who falls head over heels for Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams). Also featuring the hilarious Jay and Silent Bob, and a deconstruction of the racial tensions in George Lucas’ Star Wars, this is a pop culture classic which marries several of Smith’s recurring tropes, namely:  geeks, comics and comedy.

Screening: Unbreakable (25th September 5pm)

Unbreakable poster

CineClub leaps into action with a very a different and understated take on the superhero action film. In an era dominated by men in spandex (Spider Man), men in iron suits (Iron Man), men in kevlar (Batman) and, er, Scarlett Johansson, this film tried to do something a little different.  Marvel and DC this not.

We bring you M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable (2000, US) – the film which followed in the wake of his highly successful The Sixth Sense. Bruce Willis returns to appear in his second film with  Shyamalan and is reunited with Samuel L. Jackson who worked together a few years prior in Die Hard: With A Vengeance.

Unbreakable tells the story of Philadelphia security guard, David Dunn, who slowly discovers that he is a superhero. The film explores analogies between the real world and the mythology of superheroes. It was a box office success and is regarded as something of a cult classic in some quarters.

There was a period of time when Shyamalan was considered to be the next great hope for Hollywood. You get to draw your own conclusions.

Expect tension. Expect MacGuffins.

CineClub taster event: today at 1:30pm

Quick heads up! We have a CineClub taster event planned for 1:30pm today in the cinema. All new cinema-lovers are welcome. It’d also be great if any of the CineClub regulars could pop in to introduce themselves (if you are around the Uni and not too bust, of course!).CineClub-taster-19-9-13

Here’s a taster of things to come

Sometimes_They_Come_Back

Thought you got the better of us? Thought it was over? Huh? Huh? Thought that summer had finished us off, did you? We’re like the Fast and the Furious franchise – no, not full of cars and impossible tricks – we’re gonna keep coming back whether you like us or not! Like Jason Voorhees leaping out of the shadows in the Friday the 13th movies, CineClub is back from the dead and we’re unstoppable and we’re coming for you. And by that I meant we’re coming to the Cinema in the Media Centre.

[“Er….?”:  Editor]

Sorry about that – it’s been a while since I posted last. Sometimes I suffer from a bit of cabin fever and act like a bit of a psycho. Something’s gotta give, right?

Let’s get to the point! Word has it that a few films have been agreed by the secretive CineClub authorities. Not all the films have been chosen yet – that depends on the community. If you want to get involved then come along to Cineclub (every Wednesday of term at 5pm in MC207). We have a number of blank weeks in the schedule that need filling so get your thinking hats on!

Without further ado, here’s the immediate schedule of films:

What is CineClub?

It’s an informal weekly get-together of staff and students who like watching interesting films. The films are suggested by regular participants, so if you don’t like what’s on offer….

  1. come along and join the discussion afterwards to argue why and
  2. suggest something better for later in the semester.

You don’t have to be a Film or Media student to come along. We’ve even been known to let Sociologists in…

The screenings take place in the state-of-the-art (OK – maybe not 3-D yet…) cinema, which is in room MC207 of the Media Centre.  You get to see great films in a great setting ABSOLUTELY FREE. And talk about them. And go to the pub afterwards. Which is nice.

To get a flavour of the filmic gems that have been on before, check out our Previous Schedules. There’s a little bit of everything at CineClub

Out of the darkness…

… crept the light … splashing upon the screen … it can mean only one thing….

Cineclub is back. We are compiling a series of films for your delectation so watch this space. In the mean time, we are running a CineClub taster this Thursday afternoon from 1:30pm. Feel free to join us.
