Screening: The Great Hip Hop Hoax (5th November, 5pm)

Get rich or try lying

In a change to the advertised programme, and to coincide with the visit of the director, Jeanie Finlay, to give a masterclass, CineClub this week offers the award-winning feature documentary The Great Hip Hop Hoax. If you’d like to attend the masterclass then it takes place at 1pm in the Media Centre Cinema. The Great Hip Hop Hoax poster

Californian hip-hop duo Silibil n’ Brains were going to be massive. What no-one knew was the pair were really students from Scotland, with fake American accents and made up identities.

The Great Hip Hop Hoax (88 minutes) is a film about truth, lies and the legacy of faking everything in the desperate pursuit of fame. The American dream, told by people who’d never even been to America.

In case you can’t make it to the screening the film was aired on BBC4 as part of the Storyville series and, at the time of writing, was available on iPlayer here.
